Description

There are times when images present themselves, flawlessly, and with exquisitely rare timing. As I returned to Corey’s place last night (after purchasing something to drink,) I happened upon this particular cat. He’s appeared in Corey’s gallery, and he’s one of three cats responsible for the serious screen damage done to a particular door. That cat(s) in question are nicely socialized, moderately approachable (when they aren’t deciding to scamper away from you,) shameless in their feline grace, and their willingness to…steal tasty things. I’ve seen this red tabby on numerous occasions and have managed to coax him into purring and rubbing my fingers with the top of his head rather than the sides of his face. If a cat head-butts you, it’s a sign of affection. If a cat rubs you with the sides of his/her face, it’s a sign of possession. I was inordinately happy to know that I was not a feline possession. As I climbed the stairs to Corey’s back door, I happened upon this particular Red Tabby Door-Screen Shredder. I managed to nab two good shots of the little furry person in question: one without a flash (he didn’t mind that one) and one with a flash. He had a few words about that particular shot, but they weren’t as cruel as they could have been. I rather like the shot with the flash, and it represents one of the few occasions in which a case of flash induced red eye is actually desirable. I find it rather humorously incongruous that the cat in question (with “demonic” red eye) is the farthest thing from “demonic” as one can get…unless one happens to be a mouse, a squirrel, a pigeon, a Q-tip, a cotton-ball, or a wad of paper, thrown across the room. The not-exactly-little red tabby here was quite curious about my nocturnal journey, and as I was raised in a household with multiple cats, I like to think I can read their various facial expressions. This one was curious. Idly curious. A bit bored, as there were no mice, squirrels, or cotton-balls around. He didn’t mind having his picture taken, but he most definitely didn’t like the flash. I've always been convinced that cats possess the rare ability to zap human beings with "cute beams," a natural form of feline-generated energy, that (in interaction with the human brain) allows the cats in question to exercise mind-control abilities...in short, cats will fire "cute beams" at any human likely to present them with a tasty treat, a toy, or a lap upon which the cat may sleep. Of course, cute beams are also fired when the cat in question wishes to avoid any unpleasant disciplinary actions in response to shredded curtains, sofa-backs, or expensive bedspreads. There has been no photographic evidence of feline cute beams until now. This particular red tabby was caught in the act of discharging cute beams in...well...in a standard display of feline cuteness. As always, thank you for viewing, reading, and commenting, and I hope you’re all having a great remainder of the weekend.

I'm a cat-lover myself, and find your story quite amusing. No cats now, though.:)

It's a great capture Chip. And the story is endearing to read for one who has 3 pets. Dogs in my case. I love the affection/possession analysis and door shredder. That cracks me up. I have one who tends to be a bit destruction when she cannot have my utter undivided attention. Still there is so much love. Couldn't live without them. Happy weekend to you too.

Aha! Cute beams! I knew it! I have photographic evidence of Polly's "I'm just a sweet little cat" beams (they're blue), and Nik's "I'm Godzilla--you must run!" beams (greenish-orange). Cats are definitely from another galaxy, I'm sure of it!

Magnificent photo, your timing is just as wonderful as the cat's timing. I love how hi head seems to be almost floating in a disembodied kind of way. I've always thought that cats don't just have your "Cute Beam" defense, but also a kind of "perhaps slightly supernatural" field that is similar to Steve Jobs' "reality distortion field" that can make you convinced that the queen of Sheba is about to manifest or something. Excellent mood and wonderful accompanying story.

LOL! A red eyed devil! Our furry friends have a special reflective layer in the back of the eye termed the tapetum, which enhances nocturnal vision. Light passes through the animal's retina from outside of the eye and is then reflected back through the retina a second time from the reflective tapetal layer beneath the retina. This double stimulation of the retina helps these species to see better than humans do in dim light situations. The color of this tapetal layer varies to some extent with an animal's coat color. A black Labrador retriever, for example, will usually have a green tapetal reflection. A buff Cocker spaniel will generally show a yellow tapetal reflection. Most young puppies and kittens have a blue tapetal reflection until the structures in the back of the eye fully mature at six to eight months of age. "Color dilute" dogs and cats, such as red Siberian huskies and blue point Siamese cats, may have no tapetal pigment, and may therefore exhibit a red reflex just like human beings. I've always been fascinated by 'Red-Eye'! It happens when the subject look straight into the camera. If the flash is on the same axis as the visual axis of the camera, the reflection of the light off the blood vessels in the person's retina will give this eerie, satanic "red eye" look. People with light-colored eyes apparently exhibit the worst red eye effect; those individuals with dark-colored eyes may have enough pigment in the back of their eyes to mask this so-called red reflex.

Apparently this is a trans-dimensional cat. Do you see how its head and shoulders are on this side of a SOLID BRICK WALL??? Where is the rest of the cat? On the other side of the brick wall. If you could see inside the room, all you would see would be the hind legs and tail. The tail would be flicking madly. In this case, I think the "cute beams" are to distract you from the fact that the cat can walk through walls. I only noticed it because I'm working on the prequel to that story which happens to contain trans-dimensional cats.

Definitely some oriental in this fine tabby. Oriental retinas flash red, other breeds tend to the green or yellow-green. I'll wager his daddy was some strutting siamese. You are right about those "cute beams". Though here in Canada we call them "cute lasers" complete with gestured air quotes ala Doctor Evil (Mike Meyers is one of us). How else can you explain how they took over the world and enslaved our race to care for their every need. Now they make the big decisions about war and stuff. Thus they can now rid the world of a greater evil.... mice - and the squirrels. And I have not only been head butted (in my sleep) by my cat, she definitely considers me her property judging by all the kitty slobber she's rubbed on me. There is a peculiar other-world like quality about cats under these circumstances. Like they may be truly living gods beneath that cutie, fluffy exterior.

Well, I had to really stop and study this photo a bit to convince myself that this kitty - aside from having high-beams - did not posess some bizarre ability to transmute matter, and slip through solid brick walls. I finally figured out that he's sitting in a window, but it's a delightful shot! I'll bet this kitty had a big spot in his eyes for a few minutes!

Seems you've captured not only a charming and mystifying shot of your screen door shredding cat, but also the considerable imaginations of many here. My personal take is this is a gargoyle who has taken the form of a cat to hide it's true nature, but the eyes and blending into the brick wall kind of give it away.

I was also confused by the stonework. I thought your cat was part giraffe. Super shot Chip and watch out for those eyes. Fantastic narrative too. Dana

I have been zapped by those rays many times! I'm glad to see incontrovertible proof of their existence! It's funny about the head-butting thing. I had a cat named Neo, also a ginger cat, who was not one to overtly show his affection. He didn't come up for rubs or get in my lap overly much. But when I sat at the computer, he would come up and head-butt my legs repeatedly. Of course, since he was a great one for jumping in any seat as soon as it was vacated, he may have just loved my chair. My sweetheart Tella head-butts me all the time, even (or maybe especially) if she has to step around or on top of a book to do it. She has amazingly potent cute beams. Excellent image and great narrative! Wonderful capture of the glowing eyes. Even from across the room where the rest of the Red Tabby is fading into the brickwork, those eyes shine out like headlights. I love the depth of the image and that triangular head among all the vertical lines of the walls, window frames, and railings. Very enjoyable read!
