Description

Turning on final for runway 02R/20L at Aeroporto Santos Dumont. Santos Dumont was opened in 1936 on a landfill near the area where Pan American Clippers and other flying boats landed. The airport serves a a regional hub and is the second major airport in Rio de Janeiro. Its main runway (02R/20L) is 4,341-ft long. Airport elevation is 11-ft. In 2010 the airport handled 126,515 landings and take-offs, 7,805,387 passengers and 3,400 metric tons of cargo. Santos Dumont airport is famous for having one of the shortest runways on which Boeing and Airbus aircraft can land. View is from the top of Sugarloaf Mountain in a northerly direction. The high rises of Centro (the business district of Rio) is on the left and the 8.25 mile long Rio-Nitroi bridge, that connects Rio de Janeiro with the municipality of Nitroi, is in the distance. Super shot Sig. Must appear unique to be standing on ground above landing traffic. 4,341 feet!!! I'll say that is short. I did most of my light plane flying on/off 5,000 runways (WWII Army Air Corps runways). But then today's thrust reversers and brakes must be very effective. Bet the commercial pilots aren't crazy about going in there:)

I like the shot with the misty background and the information as well! That is pretty short for big jets. Just fine for good weather and if everything works correctly, but bad news if it doesn't.
