Description

A while back, Roxy (brewgirlca) came up with a great challenge. The idea was to go back to an early work in your gallery, and recreate it as you would do it today. What a great idea! You can see Roxy's challenge here. With that in mind, I went back to the first few images I posted here, and selected my fourth upload, entitled "Phaedra Moonshadow." The original can be seen here. The original started out as a pencil drawing, and was scanned into Photoshop where it was painted with my Wacom. Although at the time, I thought it wasn't half bad, I much prefer the new version! The new version is a combination of several parts. Phaedra, her outfit, the closest trees, the foreground, some of the grass, the lanterns and lantern staffs, and of course the lighting were all done in Poser 8. The background is a combination of two Bryce renders. The fog layers were added in Photoshop, as was the moon, stars, and some of the foliage. For her lanterns, I wanted to use the original lantern staff. I took that layer from the original Photoshop file, made a JPG out of it, and applied it to a symmetrical lattice in Bryce to create a 3D model of the staff. I exported it as an .OBJ file, and imported it to Poser. I used a simple shader for the color and surface, then created a prop from it. I used the lanterns from DM's Elven Rock package, and placed point lights inside them. Phaedra's sparkly "skirt" is a Photoshop brush - can't remember where I got it, but I'll add credit if I find it. I want to dedicate this to four wonderful friends and artists. First of all, Roxy for coming up with this great idea. And also to three great friends who have been there offering their encouragement and support from the beginning. At the time of this posting, the original image has 3 comments from these friends. Thank you, Rosey, Barry, and Adrie! I may do another re-do of this image - but I'll have to start from scratch again. When I tried to save the latest Poser file, Poser did what it's best at - crashed. It completely scrambled the Pz3 file, and it's now completely unuseable. Hope everyone has a safe and happy 4th of July, and for those of my friends around the world, hope you also have a wonderful day! Although I don't always get by to say thanks personally, I really do appreciate your comments, faves, support, and especially your friendship! WOO-HOO!!!! I just found out my last post, Girls From TNA, Chapter 2, Page 7 was one of three images selected for the Mixed Medium Gallery Star Chart # 26! My girls are so proud! :-D (me too!) :0D

I try to remember to save my images in stages in files BEFORE rendering... too many times I spent hours creating a large scene and I go to render and everything freezes... I leave my computer on for the whole night and next day and no luck... I would of titled this: "I'm being followed by a Moon Shadow" LOL

Although the old scene was beautiful in it's own way - love the painting.. I like how this shows more reality and also how you have grown as an artist, learning all your different techniques and software and bringing them together. The shadows and light here are gorgeous. The fact that you made the staff prop in Bryce is inspiring.. really going to have to dig into that when life calms a bit more. Yes, truly a great piece.. and I need to answer the challenge myself now that I'm settled a little. I've unpacked a bit, but a lot went into storage. Getting a bigger place in a couple of months so no need to unpack the lot until then. :) hugz

I like the re-do Rod. Looks great! Sorry I wasn't there from the start, but the newer version looks great. The lighting is excellent!

I love the painterly look of the old version but this one truely is a 3-d work of art. It is amazing how much you have grown since that image was posted and just reading all the things you have done here - learned to do in less than 2 years time - wow, what an achievment. Especially impressive for me is taking an object layer from photoshop and turning it into a 3 d object for poser.

Wow! What a contrast. The original is very cool in its own right. The painted look makes it very look very stylized and mosaic like. It reminds me of Hindu style of art. The new one is a whole other world. Great lighting and great scene creation. Very cool making the 2D lanterns to .objs Amazing and inspiring work. When Roxy made this challenge I knew the image I wanted to do right away. Now I just have to get to it. Excellent work.

I was looking at the original version and I could only say that you have done a great job on both, while the 2D version has its own amazing beauty, the 3D version was done in a different fashion. You have maintained that very distinctive Rod's art style. Just flawless. Kudos, Big Bro!

What an image HotRod, it's amazing what increased skill and improvements in software can do for improving an early image - very nicely done and the results are very impressive!

Fine render Rod...but the real interesting item here is Roxy's challenge and what you've done with it! Fascinating. Now, I have to run and take a look in the Mixed Medium Star Charts...why does that have such a nautical ring to it???
