"Though I might travel afar, I will meet only what I carry with me, for every man is a mirror. We see only ourselves reflected in those around us. Their attitudes and actions are only a reflection of our own. The whole world and its condition has its counter parts within us all. Turn the gaze inward. Correct yourself and your world will change."

The main thing in a shot like this is the model's comfort. If your model is comfortable, then the shot will be a success, and often it is up to the photographer to be occasionally bossy and just go: "Okay, don't smile!" (that never works, by the way, the minute you say, "don't smile" the model smiles, and that is when you capture them, unless--of course--you actually meant for the model to not smile! In which case, never say: "don't smile." I learned that the hard way.) I think what really works well in this photograph (aside from the obvious technical competence) is the fact that the shot is in black and white, AND it's well seen. The pose is classic and elegant, very naturalistic. I might have had her relax her elbows a tiny bit more, as the straight arms seem to add a tension to the shot. That's such a miniscule thing, however, because the tension is NOT something anyone would notice and it doesn't detract from the shot; I only noticed, because I tend to focus on stuff like posture, finger position, elbow-bends, and whether toes are clenched, spread, or curled, as indicators of character traits. I'm weird like that. I noticed her natural shape seems to be built for those little, tiny bends of this joint or that, so a tiny, little relaxation/bend of the elbows would just carry her natural curves and lines just a wee bit farther. As it stands, though, this shot is a perfect one and so a bend in the elbows wouldn't "improve" the shot, because improvement is not necessary. I love the radiance of this photo, the bubbling personality, and sense of spontaneity heightened by the fact that it's in black and white. I love black and white photography, because for as much as I adore colors, I always get the sense that emotion is heightened without color. This is a great shot; it must have been fun to make because it's so much fun to look at.
