Description

Hotel Le Chateau Montréal « Le Château » , a residence of high distinction in downtown Montreal, is surrounded by the Ritz-Carlton and Sofitel hotels, the Mount Royal Club, the Holt&Renfrew fashion store and The Montreal Museum of Fine Arts. The Honourable Pamphile R. DuTremblay, Q.C., owner of « La Presse » newspaper, commissioned the architectural firm of « Ross and Macdonald » to design this building of 136 apartments. Construction began in February 1925 and was carried out by « Anglin Norcross & Company, General Contractors ». Once completed, « Le Château » became known as the most prestigious residential building, a reputation that has flourished to this day. The choice of location in what was then Montreal’s sphere of influence (the Golden Square Mile) set a trend for the construction of now culturally significant high-quality buildings along elegant Sherbrooke Street. The building’s architecture was part of the château style inspired by the castles of France, which was very much in vogue at the time. Grand hotels created in this elegant motif sprung up across Canada: the Château Frontenac in Quebec City, Banff Springs Hotel in Banff, the Royal York Hotel in Toronto and the renewed Hotel Vancouver in Vancouver. Le Château’s remarkable facade is clad in Tyndall Stone from Manitoba. The main entrance leads to three wings, with six elevators in all. Each elevator is shared by two apartments per floor. The height of the building ranges from 12 to 14 floors, and each apartment has a functional fireplace. « Le Château, 1321 Sherbrooke Ouest Inc. » is incorporated under the Canada Business Corporations Act. Each owner among the 136 residential units holds a property lease and a corresponding number of shares in the corporation « Le Château, 1321 Sherbrooke Ouest Inc ». The Company is run by a Board of Directors composed of seven members who are elected by shareholders. At the annual general meeting, the Board of Directors submits the next year’s budget, and important decisions are presented for the shareholders to approve.
