Description

The Rama-Class Ballistic Destroyer (DDB) is one of the oldest warships in the Terran Protectorate Stellar Navy. Only the Holstein Pinnance is older. Even though the ships first flew into action 70 years ago, they have been kept effective combat vessels through a number of upgrades. The old "tin cans" were designed for upgrading and were mass produced in large numbers. The Protectorate is loathe to mothball them all and they need the firepower in the newest conflict. The biggest upgrade to the vessel is unseen, with the use of automation and systems design improvements that have cut the crew requirements nearly by half. In addition, it's one energy weapon system, its heavy pulse lasers, have been replaced with a more powerful pair of particle beam cannons. Besides that, improved sensors and command and control systems, not much has changed in how the ship gets the job done. This was one of my first ship designs. It sorely needed an upgrade from what it looked like when I first started out making ships. The base design is still the same, the flying gunbrick I call it, but there have been a LOT of cosmetic changes to the fine details that make it a much better model. Neat. I like the nickname. On the other hand, in space, you don't need streamlining.

Brilliant design, brutal & to the point as warships should be. One issue - surely there are 16 120mm EMAACs mounted on 8 turrets, not 8 of them as stated? 4 turrets on the top side, presumably 4 on the underside, each with a pair? A minor point with regards to the render, but for the history & story that go with the ship, anyone facing off against it would be deeply unhappy with their intel services if the point-defence systems were understated by 50%!

A ship thats almost entirely made of guns and engine. As it should be. Of course, techinally, every time they fire the big gun they'll end up going backwards. An issue with space combat they never seem to show in the movies. :)
