Description

This painting was done as part of an online workshop and exhibition: http://www.redbubble.com/groups/solo-exhibition/forums/12954/topics/218849-sojie-12-workshop?page=1 Artists were asked to pair up with photographers to create their translation of a selected photograph. I based this painting on "Of Earth #1" by Alissa Brunskill http://www.redbubble.com/people/alissabrunskill/art/4738853-of-earth-1 The photo includes wonderful patterns, including some ‘agate eyes’. My shapes, line and textures were inspired by these. The painting was done on Yupo paper with W&N paints. The size of the original is 20×11″.

this is interesting, complex, and an incredibly creative response to that photo (which is a great photo, by the way). it reminds me a bit of the cherubim illustration on the cover of A Wind in the Door that i had as a child. cherubim is the plural of cherub, and it was described as many eyes and many wings of all different kinds. the gives me the same feeling of one made of many, of wonder, and a little awe. it's not a safe piece, but it also doesn't hide behind being provocative. excellent work.
