Description

This Hammerhead was caught and killed by fishing ships who were only after one thing....fins. Every year, millions of sharks worldwide are mercilessly slaughtered in order to make Shark Fin Soup. Fishing ships capture large schools of sharks and fin them, a process of cutting off the fins of the sharks and throwing the rest of the shark, often alive, back into the ocean to drown in agony. Scientists estimate as many as 73 million sharks are killed annually, with the population of some species dropping by 90%. The Great and the Scalloped Hammerhead are both listed on the World Conservation Union's red list as endangered. This Hammerhead corpse travels the world in it's frozen coffin in an attempt to draw attention to the worldwide plight of sharks. It's currently on show at Melbourne Aquarium.

Stunning capture my friend. Sad for their fins to be used for soup. God Bless.

It is a scandal that needs stopping. I have been lucky enough to dive with these creatures, there is nothing more satisfying than seeing these graceful creatures in their element...

Should be illegal to kill a creature unless all of it can be used. I feel the same way about frog legs.

Nice shot, but the awareness-raising takes precedence. Thank you for this bit of education.

Once again, Asia (and often the rich Euros etc!) drive this awful trade! It should be stopped at once.. If fishers (if thats what you call them?) are caught they should have their boats taken away and destroyed in front of them.. End of.. A fine but very very sad shot Andrew! Thanks for showing.. Rob

The info makes me so sad. :( I wonder how the people that did this to this shark would feel if the same thing was done to them. Thank you for this excellent image and info. While watching whale wars I think how could anyone want to hurt something that is so beautiful and never bothers no one.

Shark finning would undeniably stop if people developed a taste for fisherman limb soup, and I wholeheartedly think that scores of shark fishermen SHOULD be limbed, all for bowls of soup. I mean, c'mon: turnabout IS fair play. As for this shot, it's quite moving and I love the fact that it's something more than just decorative photography. Well done.

Point well taken...industrial, wanton killing for a buck. Where there is a market, there are always workers who work without remorse. Chip has a good idea.

It is a horrible story Andrew and a super shot my friend. Chip is spot one with his idea. We have closed beaches (Delray Beach, Florida) twice a year when the hammerheads migrate north and then south. They run dive groups to sit on the bottom and watch thousands of hammerheads swim overhead. I’ll try and snag a copy of the video, during the next migration, when I get back home. Dana

Great shot and a sad story. I agree with Chip, perhaps fisherman's entrails (removed while they're still alive)should become the next delicacy.
