Description

This is for Andrew (blinkings). From one car guy to another... This mildly customized 1951 Chevrolet Styleline Deluxe coupe was caught napping in a late winter drizzle in the New Town area of Chicago on March 1st, 1987. I attempted to fit the entire car into the shot, but the Chevy's driver had parked so close to the Ford Escort in front of him that they were practically touching, thus obscuring his bumper. Then there was a large trash can (back when there used to BE trash cans on every block) that I had to crop around... I thought about posting a newer, more technically correct car picture, but this was the one I kept coming back to. There's just something about it that I like, and I hope Andrew likes it as well.

I figure something that size should have an interplanetery range, but I suspect that fuel mileage was probably a bit low, at least in terms of interplanetary standards...but it's definitely something worth looking at. It's a remnant from the days when the USA had a future, rather than reality-tv and more overt members of the lunatic fringe running things. I love all of the details in this shot, especially the water drops on the car itself. The contrast and detailing is deliciously sharp and judging by the thumbnail alone, I thought it was one of those HiDef photos usually achieved through all sorts of exposures combined. Really nice, and I love the neighborhood surrounding the car itself; on many occasions, context is everything, and I love the glimpse of an older Chicago. There's texture...there's something to sink your teeth into, and based on what Chicago once was, it was totally willing to sink its teeth into you too! Ah, but that's what I like about the older Chicago: it toughened you up and made you strive for things. This is fantastic, and yeah, it's a perfect dedication. And have you noticed that so many of these old beauties always had a vaguely beetle or crustacean-like appearance...I keep expecting to see one with an egg pouch underneath, with the next generation of automotive contrivance inside, not yet ready to hatch, but close, as one of them would occasionally move. Great shot.

super shot!! I remember my mom had a green 1952 with 'three on the tree' I don't remember it but I have seen myself on old movies working the wheel.

It looks just like a grumpy old colonel with one of those thin white moustaches. The type who writes outraged letters to the Daily Telegraph and signs himself 'Disgusted of Tunbridge Wells'. Thankyou for your witty and so funny comment on my picture of the trapped hopper, Corey!

Nice shot Corey. It reminds me of a 1949 Pontiac my Dad had. It had a sun visor too. Dad wore glasses and we girls in the family said Dad's cars always looked like him because his cars all had sunvisors. For as long as you could buy a car with that accessory. I really like your B&W work.

A beautiful shiny car capture, and the B&W shows all the details very well. The rain makes it look as if it has a texture to the paintwork.

Wow. That car looks like an old-style accountant, with a green eyeshade and arm gaiters. Excellent b&w work!
