Anas formosa
This is a very, VERY rare bird, at least for this part of the world. So rare that many birders thought it was extinct. It breeds in Siberia and normally winters in Viet Nam or neighboring countries. This one showed up in December and stayed approximately 2 weeks. There are records also in either Washington or Oregon, but no place else on this continent. He wasn't extremely shy, but you needed a very good telephoto to get a closeup. I used a 1300mm.

1300 mm ? waouw, I'm impressed ! Thanks for sharing this rare image; I like the great diversity in the photographic part of your gallery... When I was living in Tucson, AZ (in 1981...) I was not that much into bird watching, never realizing that even in the desert one could find so many different species... I saw you continued your journey into my old gallery; I'm glad that you found some images interesting and I thank you very much for all your comments ! :~)

the little fellow looks happy to be where he is - but he might have missed his turn in Alaska. Looks like you did a fine job holding it steady - glad you use a camera and not a gun.
