Description

There was once a girl named Amy, with big, bright eyes and a powerful, soulful voice. Now she is no more and we hurry up to judge her. Yes, she did not make the best choices in her life, yes, she needed help. But to all the critics and the tabloids, a pertinent question: did you reach out to her to give her some help? Did you snatch the bottle or the drugs from her hand? Amy Winehouse died tragically, a postmodern embodiment of idols made up in a hurry and then mercilessly stoned down by the mindless crowd. At this moment, when she is beyond our love and hate, beyond the greedy grasp of tabloids, let us be honest: how many of us laughed at Amy Winehouse, seeing her struggling on the stage in Serbia, back in June? How many of us posted insulting comments on various forums? Wait, I don't need the answer, the posts are still there and will remain, a permanent insult to the memory of a person who is no longer among us to defend herself. No one saw the cry for help in those pathetic images. No one saw a very ill girl in desperate need for immediate action to save her. I can only say this: the most frequent comment regarding Amy Winehouse's death is something like "I saw it coming, no surprise, it was bound to happen". Well, I wonder, if everyone saw it coming, why didn't anyone do something - snatch this girl, pull her back from the collision course with disaster, with death? I don't like laying blame, but I can't help myself from thinking: this shouldn't have happened, this could have been prevented. I believe that the human race has a unique ability of going from one tragedy to another without learning anything from them. Instead of being judgmental, we should be compassionate. Instead of mourning the dead, we should act to save them while they're alive. I don't think we have the right to mourn a person after we laughed at their misery and suffering while alive. Snuff out your candles! Dry those tears! Stop typing that heartfelt obituary! Go to all the websites, instead, and try deleting every bad word you wrote about Amy Winehouse, if you can. She may be a fallen angel, but we all helped cut off her wings little by little. As for Amy, she is beyond our cruel words. And that's peace and tranquility enough for her tormented soul. Be in peace, dear soul!

This is a moving tribute to one of my favorite artists of recent decades; I first heard her music while living in Prague and as a result of that, her voice is forever linked in my mind with that city. For me, that's quite a tribute since Prague is more of my home than the city I was born in and the city that I live in at the moment. I'll return to Prague, perhaps permanently, and it'll be a bit strange, in disturbing ways, to be there without her voice singing new songs. It's so easy to laugh at people we deem "pathetic" or "tragic" in some particular way; it's always easier to laugh and point fingers at someone struggling rather than do the harder thing and try to understand how to help them, especially if (by at least some accounts) that person is resistant to help. I'm also of the opinion that no one resists help, they simply shy away from "help" offered with ulterior motives and attitudes of superiority. They're right to do so, as such "help" never does any good to the person receiving it. It only strokes the egos and bank accounts of the people giving it. There's one thing for sure, however; Amy Winehouse has achieved something many of us can only dream of, and for that she's immortal in ways that hateful bloggers and opinionated comment-makers cannot achieve. She was an artist who left something behind. Only time will tell how enduring that may be...but the fact remains, her music is there; her witty, playful charm in interviews is still on record, and for me, the best tribute to her is my own memory of seeing her on a rather mean-spirited game show, hugging an old guy that everyone else was laughing at. People still love her music (and her lopsided, witty personality.) I will still love it and I'll continue to associate her with my adopted home city. What you've posted here is one of the best tributes that I've seen. Well done!

Amy and her music were not exactly on my favourites list, however, I agree with the sensitive and intelligent comments all noted here. How easily the press rip open someone and take out only the faults they find and ignore the finer points that if they looked close enough they would find often outweigh the faults and errors. Amy was no angel, but who amongst us could claim to be either. May she rest in peace, far from the acidic tongues intent on bringing her down.
