I decided to be born in the wee hours of May 7. The doctors had scheduled my birth for May 9, but one of my key characteristics is that I'm not good at taking orders.
I stormed through kindergarten leaving behind teary, crying children whose sandwiches I had "spiced" with sand or caterpillars, or whose toys I had torn to pieces. I continued the practice in school, only this time I had more raw materials - fountain pens, books, notebooks, chalk, etc. Marvelously enough, none of my crimes against classmates were ever proven, and I managed to graduate with an impeccable record of good behavior.
High school was rather dull - my classmates were either too goody-goody or downright nerds to deserve any special treatment from me. College was more fun, and I still remember fondly all the martinizing I did with my colleagues over a pint of cheap rum in the cold winter days, while a few chosen victims were attending the classes to provide us with reading materials.
After college... life began, and it's not been particularly nice to me. But hey, I can still kick back every once in a while, and boy, it's really, really fun.
For the rest, I leave all to the poor, especially my debts :).

This is a moving tribute to one of my favorite artists of recent decades; I first heard her music while living in Prague and as a result of that, her voice is forever linked in my mind with that city. For me, that's quite a tribute since Prague is more of my home than the city I was born in and the city that I live in at the moment. I'll return to Prague, perhaps permanently, and it'll be a bit strange, in disturbing ways, to be there without her voice singing new songs. It's so easy to laugh at people we deem "pathetic" or "tragic" in some particular way; it's always easier to laugh and point fingers at someone struggling rather than do the harder thing and try to understand how to help them, especially if (by at least some accounts) that person is resistant to help. I'm also of the opinion that no one resists help, they simply shy away from "help" offered with ulterior motives and attitudes of superiority. They're right to do so, as such "help" never does any good to the person receiving it. It only strokes the egos and bank accounts of the people giving it. There's one thing for sure, however; Amy Winehouse has achieved something many of us can only dream of, and for that she's immortal in ways that hateful bloggers and opinionated comment-makers cannot achieve. She was an artist who left something behind. Only time will tell how enduring that may be...but the fact remains, her music is there; her witty, playful charm in interviews is still on record, and for me, the best tribute to her is my own memory of seeing her on a rather mean-spirited game show, hugging an old guy that everyone else was laughing at. People still love her music (and her lopsided, witty personality.) I will still love it and I'll continue to associate her with my adopted home city. What you've posted here is one of the best tributes that I've seen. Well done!

Amy and her music were not exactly on my favourites list, however, I agree with the sensitive and intelligent comments all noted here. How easily the press rip open someone and take out only the faults they find and ignore the finer points that if they looked close enough they would find often outweigh the faults and errors. Amy was no angel, but who amongst us could claim to be either. May she rest in peace, far from the acidic tongues intent on bringing her down.
