Description

I lost a lot on this pic had to really crop it down just to get it on here and there were so many of them that had gathered in this tree and have no idea why but thought it made for an interesting pic.

You were very brave to get this picture! Most likely there's a Queen at the heart of this swarm.

There will be a new 'queen' in the centre of that bunch which would have been ousted from a hive nearby taking many of the drones and workers with her.

That's right. The queen is being protected. But, they may only be resting and sending out scouts for a more perfect place to start building their colony. I had a huge swarm removed from my front yard tree once and they had only been there a short while - a week or so, yet, the keeper also removed 35 pounds of honeycomb at the same time. We were told that the swarm will go out to search for a new home when a hive gets too large to support, leaving the queen and guards behind. Often they travel a long distance so they create a temporary "home base" while they search - sometimes for a week or so. When a new location is agreed upon, the queen relocates and a new queen is left to rule over half of the original hive that stays behind. Amazing shot. I couldn't get close enough to my swarm to take photos. and the tree was only 10 feet from my front door! I have a full terror of bees...

My father had bees as a hobby and we got alot of wonderful honey. I went with him to catch swarms of been from the area and he had to be careful to get the queen too. It was really interesting. Excellent shot you got.
