Description
Well, back to our regularly scheduled program...
The Wood Elves are the next Sub-race of elves from my "world". There are a few unique things about them as opposed to the other elves. First, while most of the other sub-races live almost exclusively on their island chain homeland, the Wood Elves almost all live on the mainland. They are the most populous of the sub-races, stretching across the continent all the way from the cold north to the jungle climates. As such they range in appearance much more than other elves. They can be extremely pale or very dark in skin tone. Eyes and hair color vary greatly as well, sometimes even altering to suit the changing of the seasons.
Second, they are the only sub-race whose ancestors were originally a very different sort of elf. When the elves first walked the world it was a terrible, inhospitable place, unstable and unpredictable. The elves by necessity were nomadic (as was every other race at that time). When the "Great Settling" occurred and the world became full of life, a large segment of the Sky Elves became enamored of the newly formed forests. They became very protective of these places, but found that they're bodies were ill suited for the twilight world they'd fallen in love with. As such they took the great magic that was part of them and forced it to alter themselves to better adapt to the lives they wished to lead. While the remaining Sky Elves are around 7'-7'6" feet tall, the average Wood Elf is about 5'6". A great deal of their magic was used up in changing themselves, but what they retain is geared entirely toward taking care of the forest, communing with its creatures, and calling upon the occasional earth elemental. While they no longer retain the Sky Elves' extreme resistance to cold, overall they are able to withstand a broader range of climates.
Of all the elves they are the most likely for a human to have met. That is not to say that it is common to meet one of them as they tend to stick to their forests and are very suspicious of any non-elf entering the boarders of their forests. However, for this very reason most conflicts with humans result from the humans wanting to cut down trees, clear areas for farming, or set up a summer home to take the their fellow nobles out hunting. When that happens things devolve very quickly into violence.
Unfortunately, humans (and most other peoples, including other elves) tend to underestimate Wood Elves. They look very young to humans, their large eyes, beardless faces and smaller bodies causing the humans to think of them as children. The king foolish enough to order his troops into their forests finds out very quickly that he's made a terrible mistake when none of his men are seen or heard from again.
