Description

This is the entrance to Stirling Castle, Stirling, Scotland. You can see, by the condition of the front gate, and the scaffolding in the background, this castle was in the middle of a major renovation. Many areas were closed the day I was there. They were taking walls apart and rebuilding them with modern techniques but each stone went back in its original place. More info, on Stirling Castle, with my last post. 1995 photos scanned. A few structures of the fourteenth century remain, while the outer defenses fronting the town date from the early eighteenth century. Several Scottish Kings and Queens have been crowned at Stirling, including Mary, Queen of Scots, in 1543. There have been at least eight sieges of Stirling Castle, including several during the Wars of Scottish Independence, with the last being in 1746, when Bonnie Prince Charlie unsuccessfully tried to take the castle. This info from Wikipedia. Zoom can help. Thanks for stopping by my gallery, taking a look and for all your previous favs and comments. They are very much appreciated. Dana

Very cool shot and great information I'd hat to be the one to have to mow the grass up on the wall

Excellent capture! Great history to this castle and I think that's more likely Scottish Moss up on the wall so it don't need to be mowed. :)

Great news that they are restoring this lovely old castle but not so good that there were areas that you couldn't see. A lovely capture of this entrance.

There are so many historical treasures here (California) that are deteriorating rapidly, and there is no money to restore them, even though they make millions of dollars each year in tourism. I am happy they are restoring this castle.
