Description

Pyrocephalus rubinus. Some of you are familiar with the Vermilion Flycatcher, with the brilliant red body and dark wings in the male. This is a female. A leucistic bird is not quite an albino, but has very little color. On this bird, you can see yellow under the body close to the tail (where it should be more of a light red color), and dark eyes, and everything else is white. Leucistic birds are not very common, probably because they are easy for predators to see, and it must be a recessive trait. They say it takes energy to make the colors, and some birds don't have the energy. I photographed her at Sweetwater Wetlands, Arizona, USA, where she hung out for a few weeks in December, and then disappeared. Thank you to everyone for your great comments and support!
