Hi everybody,
My name is Dana Pommet and my wife’s name is Josephine. I was born in Gloucester, Massachusetts, in 1942, and except for a tour in the Navy, lived there for most of my life. I retired to Delray Beach, Florida in December 2000. We love to travel and photography goes hand and hand with that. I went digital about 5 years ago and started posting November 22, 2008. I have met so many wonderful people on RR and that makes this whole process so much more interesting than just posting photos. Thanks for all the comments and keep them coming.
Update  January 2012: After hiding and denying my mild Dyslexia, for most of my professional life, and now fighting with its advancement – I want to thank you all for putting up with my poor typing skills and spelling problems. I know that my spell checker hates me and I now depend completely on audio books rather then actually reading printed books.  Life marches on!  ÂÂ

Oooh, WOW! Chicago Yellow Jackets are exhibitionists: they don't build that curtain...well, in this case, that skin. How interesting. That looks like a pretty solid nest too...I'll bet it's an older colony...either that or you were really, really, I mean really close to it. Well...maybe not. I love this! I notice these ladies have dark antennas and not the orangy/yellow ones common in the Midwest and so I'm guessing that these are Eastern Yellow Jackets. This may not be woodlice, but I love it! I have quite a close friendship with this species; I've never been stung, and there have been times when I'd get close enough to touch a nest. Usually all that ever happens is one of the wasps on guard duty would eye me with suspicion and then lose interest as if to say, "Oh, you again." They love Snapple (Peach Tea.) Okay, I'm rambling, but that's because I love this shot. Thank you for the dedication! I'm thrilled. Actually, I'm kinda giddy and inspired to go find the nearest hive.

Cool photograph of the hive, Dana. Other than the insects, this looks all the world like a spool of heavy string rather than a yellow jacket nest.
