Description

Got the Matilda MkI from Touchwood & just had to take it out for a drive, Used Panko's excellent SMLE & setup my Tommy stuff 1940 style. Created the headset & berets with the RTR cap badge, also used my overall in black with a cutout of the collarless army shirt as these are enlisted men, same for the infantry a mixture of BD blouse & shirt, this is mostly a test run, mostly to give an idea of the diminutive size of early WWII armour. This is the Matilda MkI A11, an infantry tank, with the max speed of 8 Km/Hr, it was heavily armoured with a crew of two, crew commander/machine gunner & driver, the tank commander was also the radio op, a very very busy tanker. These Matilda MkIs along with the Matilda MkIIs (unrelated infantry tank with the name but a completely different tank) of the 4th and 7th Royal Tank Regiment(RTR) along with the the 6th and 8th Battalions Durham Light Infantry almost routed the german army at the battle of Arras on the 21st of may 1940. However they were up against Generalmajor Erwin Rommel's 7. Panzerdivision. The german Wehrmacht invaded France with 523 Panzer Is, 955 Panzer IIs, 349 Panzer IIIs, 278 Panzer IVs, 106 Panzer 35(t)s and 228 Panzer 38(t)s. Through the use of tactical radios and superior tactics, the Germans were able to outmaneuver and defeat French and British armor. At the battle of Arras the superior armour of the Matildas almost stopped the germans, none of the german tanks & pak 37s anti tank guns could stop the british tanks, Rommel's inspired use of the 88mm anti aircraft guns stopped the british & french counter offensive, routing the BEF & french armies to Dunkirk. On that day may 21st 1940 the dreaded 88 was born & became the scourge of allied tankers. thanks for looking.
