Description

Towards the end of the walk...well nearly. This is Haweswater reservoir. There was a village there but to supply Manchester with water the valley was flooded and the old village and church are under water. The bit that sticks out with the trees on is called the Rigg. Our car is parked at the head of the reservoir on the top left side, you can see the road that heads there. An act of parliament gave Manchester the right to flood this valley to supply water to the city. At the time, there was public outcry about the decision, as the valley of Mardale was populated by the farming villages of Measand and Mardale Green and the construction of the reservoir would mean that these villages would be flooded and lost. Originally, Haweswater was a natural lake about four kilometres long, almost divided in two by a tongue of land at Measand, the two reaches of the lake were known as High Water and Low Water. When full it now holds 18.6 trillion gallons of water....thats a lot of cups of tea. Being off the beaten track of the usual visitor haunts of the Lake District it is far less known but it is an area of outstanding beauty which changes dramatically with the light and the seasons. Haweswater is the only place in England where Golden Eagles nest. The female left in 2004 but the male can still be seen soaring high above. One the mountains in the far distance is what is known as High Street along which runs the old Roman Road, more of a wide track now than a road but very popular with fell walkers. We walked that last year It is certainly a beautiful area for long walks and stunning lake district scenery

Gorgeous photo.. your story reminds me of a man made lake reservoir near where I grew up. They flooded out a valley - including a small town to make it, and then later they had to drain the lake in order to repair the dam. People went down to see the town after the land had dried up a bit. Said it was eerie to see the buildings still there - though water damaged. Very cool photo though, and thank you for the history to go with it.

there's something eerie about looking at such a beautiful, peaceful landscape and realizing two whole towns are beneath that dark blue surface. it makes this impressive shot even more interesting and poignant.
