Description
I enjoy shooting wasps....they won't sting me because I don't show fear so I can get shots like this. Looks like the middle one is looking right at the lens...it flinched when the lens got close to it!

I have quite a relationship with Yellowjackets...these look like the German breed; those are the ones that sting multiple times, and send pheromone signals to others in the hive so that they can get in on the action. They're also exhibitionists as they don't cover their nests with those papery curtains other wasps are so fond of. This looks like a spring-time shot, as the nest is still small and there are only three of them; yellowjackets don't recycle nests very often and a queen who has overwintered usually builds a new one from scratch, even if it's attached to the one she was born in. She won't occupy that nest, unless she's lucky and mothers a rather huge colony. And why do I know this? Don't ask! I will say that I like this shot quite a lot, and I love the pose of that alert, little guardian. And you're absolutely right, wasps don't sting unless they feel threatened, and human fear is indistinguishable (to them) from aggression. I've also learned, much to my chagrin, that the human habit of enjoying iced tea (usually peach flavored) is indistinguishable from the act of offering your nice glass to tea to them. Ah...yellowjackets are shameless tea guzzlers! This is a nice shot!

Thanks for the info. Actually this was taken in the heat of summer and was a rather new nest as I regularly knock them off the eaves of my home. They like barbequed chicken too!
