Description

This photo was taken west of Tucson, Arizona, USA in 1996. The saguaro is a large, tree-sized cactus species in the monotypic genus Carnegiea. It is native to the Sonoran Desert in the US state of Arizona and the Mexican state of Sonora. The saguaro blossom is the State Wildflower of Arizona. Saguaros have a relatively long life span. They take up to 75 years to develop a side arm. The arms themselves are grown to increase the plant's reproductive capacity (more apices equal more flowers and fruit). The growth rate of saguaros is strongly dependent on precipitation; saguaros in drier western Arizona grow only half as fast as those in and around Tucson, Arizona. Some specimens may live for more than 150 years. T the largest known saguaro is the Champion Saguaro. It grows in Maricopa County, Arizona, and is 45.3 feet (13.8 meters) tall with a girth of 10 feet (3.1 meters). These cacti can grow anywhere from 15 to 50 feet. They grow slowly from seed, and not at all from cuttings. Whenever it rains, saguaros soak up the rainwater. The cactus will visibly expand, holding in the rainwater. It conserves the water and slowly consumes it. The holes in the cactus are from bird nests. That is a Barrel Cactus in the foreground. Some info from Wikipedia. Photo scanned. Zoom will help. Thanks for stopping by my gallery, taking a look and for all your previous favs and comments. They are very much appreciated. Dana

Great capture and thanks for the info about them! When one look at them they have personalities - they have a long time to "think" and drink water, too! ;o)

When I am looking at these cacti - I am always reminded of the 'ZZ TOP' album cover, and all that's missing - is the howling wolf ... ;-) thanks for the all details Dana, BB
