I have been modelling medieval and modern times architecture for years, and this is now my main hobby - and almost only one in 3D.
I'm primarily using Lightwave, but also 3D-Coat and other smaller packages for creating panoramas, VR objects, etc.
There are some free objects available here, and other ones on my website.

Nice job, but the barrel seems little bit to glossy to my eye. But that might be a lighting issue. My father used to build working models of this type of cannon, so we went and looked at a lot of them when I was a kid. The barrels are specially weathered with a technique where rush is burnished back into the metals. It means they loose their luster, but they don't corrode in salt air, when used on ships, or as coastal defenses.

Thanks all for your comments. @Pagrin : It is indeed a lighting issue, I have put three oversized and too intense area lights, and it gave this strange result, "swallowing" all bump details and exaggerating the specular map effect . I have re-rendered with a DPont dome light, and the result is much better. I'll post it today. Thanks for your constructive remarks.

hi, i think the modelling is well done. Only the lighting looks not so good. You really should try a few different hdr maps or just use SmartIBL. This + a little bit of fixing materials could give you much better reflections and lightning.
