Description

In my magic act, I introduce one effect as the most difficult trick I've ever attempted. Ladies and Gentlemen, presenting the most difficult photograph I've ever taken. McWay Falls is at Julia Phieffer Burns State Park, which according to the Google Maps page I printed out is 49 miles from my hotel. Since I visited Bixby Bridge first, which was 33 miles from my hotel, I drove an additional 16 miles and started looking for the park. Then I drove eight more miles and then decided I had somehow missed the park. I drove eight miles back to the Big Sur ranger station and found I had turned back about one mile short of the park, so I shot back down Highway 1. On the way, I stopped at a couple of turn outs to see if there was anything worth shooting. At one of them, I left the car running and took just two or three steps to look over the cliff. When I returned, I found that my rental car has an autolock system and now my car was locked and I had absolutely no way to get in. About 10 people gathered around offering help and advice. Since there was no cell phone service, calling for help wasn't an option. Ultimately I decided the only way out of this extremely embarrassing situation was to break a window. After 20 blows with a large rock, it became clear that breaking a car window is not as easy as it sounds. Anyway, finally an Italian guy successfully smashed a window with his car jack and I got back in my car. Since the sun was well down by this point, I nearly headed back to my hotel, but then decided that since I'd gone through all of this, I was damned sure going to get my photo. The park was closed by now, but I was able to walk up the highway (dodging traffic on the way) and find a view of the falls. It was so dark when I took this shot that it required a four-second exposure.
