Description

Archilocus alexandri There are 16 species of hummingbirds that visit southern Arizona, USA, and I have photographed 14 of them. The other two are very rare. I am especially fond of hummingbirds. I found this one at Ash Canyon Bed & Breakfast in Hereford, Arizona. Most of our hummers come up from Mexico; there are many such birds in the tropics, sometimes called "hummingbirds" and sometimes not. Few of our hummingbirds are common anyplace else in the states.

makes me think that we shouldn't be feeding them too much longer... Soon winter will be on its way.

A fantastic capture. I live here in Arizona and I have tried to photograph them, but they never stand (or hover) still long enough. A couple of times I was out in my backyard looking at red flowers (they prefer red) and one came up to me, sounding like a bumble bee, and hovered about 2 feet away from me. Before I had a chane to react, it zoomed away. I never get tired of watching them, especially when they are around a feeder and staking out their terretory!

Nice shot. I have some feeders in the yard that get some use. Just need to do some watching with my zoom lens. Cool capture!
