Description

Today we remember the end of the War in Our Indië and the rest of Asia.. 66 years ago.. with a photo of my grandfather -Judge- in Batavia, in the 1920's. He died in 1986, but the scarves of war never left him and are in me too. Today we remember at the Indische Monument in Den Haag / The Hague. The sad nick-name of my city is "Weduwe van Indië", "Widow of the Dutch Indies" (Indië is also called Indonesië, Batavia is also called Jakarta)

My attention is always attracted by these kind of photo's. My father was born in 1909 in Ned Indië, but left in the 1920-ties as teenager and never returned. My grand father, it could be very well that he had contact, or that they knew each other by name. My grandfather was well known in Ned Indië, he was Colonel in the KNIL, however he was especially known because he was not only "fluently" in Malay, but also in Japanese. In the 1910-'s he lived in Japan with his family. When he returned to the Netherlands, my grandmother passed away before I was born in Ned Indië,he always lived to the best of my knowledge in the Hague, as my father did, and I was born in the Hague!! Its a small world regards Henk
