Description
ERRR sorry better make that a Hawk!
The Hawk is used in the Australian Airforce primarily as a trainer for pilots who hope to progress onto Hornets. The cockpit is very similar to that of the Hornet, making it a perfect jet to learn on. But it's still an awesome performer in it's own right. Equipped with a moderately swept wing, which has a combat flap setting and ample reserves of power from the Adour engine, the Hawk is able to demonstrate exceptional flying characteristics. The aircraft has an excellent turn rate in both clean and loaded configurations and an impressive climb rate.
Throughout it's flight envelope the Hawk demonstrates stable, carefree handling characteristics with no control difficulties and therefore provides an exceptionally safe training environment for pilots.
The aircraft is equipped with the latest cockpit displays and sensors and is able to demonstrate air-to-air and air-to-ground combat and tactical formation flying and perform extended missions through the use of an Air to Air Refuelling (AAR) probe and external wing tanks. Consequently the Hawk is an ideal platform for the introduction of student pilots in the Advanced Fast Jet (AFJ) phase of conversion.
The Hawk has tandem seats, with full controls available in the front and rear cockpit. Duplication of essential controls with appropriate override facilities is provided in the rear cockpit, for example store jettison, landing gear and flaps. Internal lighting is provided for instruments, displays, and general cockpit illumination. Cockpit lighting, instruments, and displays are compatible with the use of Night Vision Goggles (NVG). And as an observer, the Hawk still provides buckets of wow factor as it easily pulls incredible G's!
My cousin trained for almost a year in these before moving on to the Super Hornet. He tells me he loved every minute of it!

Another good shot! In this case a rose with a thorn that can hurt, ha ha! We use these in Canada as well and I've had the chance to photograph them a few times and included several shots in my latest book "Edmonton's Last AIRFEST." They are awesome planes. Ours are painted black.
