Description

Cyprinus carpio. These are bred from the carp. The Japanese word for "carp" is "koi". Butterfly koi are characterized by long, flowing fins and tails. I got this photo in the Peacock restaurant in Sierra Vista, southern Arizona, USA, with permission. If you are ever in the area, try their food: Vietnamese and Chinese. It is excellent! They're located just off Fry Blvd a short distance from the main gate to Ft. Huachuca.

We have a small pond (3 1/2 feet deep, 15 feet wide) with goldfish - they mostly survive the winters and breed. We tried Koi also, but they are more fragile/sensitive to the cold. They made it a couple of years, but three weeks of very cold winter and that was it. I got angry and swore - "oh Koi"
