Description

This is a piece of petrified wood (from the Greek root petro meaning "stone" - literally "wood turned into stone") is the name given to a special type of fossilized remains of terrestrial vegetation. It is the result of a tree having turned completely into stone by the process of permineralization. All the organic materials have been replaced with minerals (mostly a silicate, such as quartz), while retaining the original structure of the wood. Unlike other types of fossils which are typically impressions or compressions, petrified wood is a three dimensional representation of the original organic material. The petrifaction process occurs underground, when wood becomes buried under sediment and is initially preserved due to a lack of oxygen which inhibits aerobic decomposition. Mineral-laden water flowing through the sediment and deposits minerals in the plant's cells and as the plant's lignin and cellulose decay, a stone mould forms in its place. In general, wood takes less than 100 years to petrify. The organic matter needs to become petrified before it decomposes completely. A forest where the wood has petrified becomes known as a petrified forest. Elements such as manganese, iron and copper in the water/mud during the petrification process give petrified wood a variety of color ranges. Pure quartz crystals are colorless, but when contaminants are added to the process the crystals take on a yellow, red, or other tint. Following is a list of contaminating elements and related color hues: carbon black, cobalt/chromium/copper - green/blue, iron oxides - red, brown, and yellow, manganese - pink/orange and manganese oxides - blackish/yellow. Petrified wood can preserve the original structure of the wood in all its detail, down to the microscopic level. Structures such as tree rings and the various tissues are often observed features. This piece most likely came from the Arizona desert and the minerals that petrified this piece of vegetation were most likely quartz, iron oxide and manganese. It is 5.15x3.25x2.25 inches (13x8x5.7 cm). This was a birthday present from my son Dana II (usanomad). Photo taken today. Some info from Wikipedia. Zoom will help. Thanks for stopping by my gallery, taking a look and for all your previous favs and comments. They are very much appreciated. Dana

I am going to start a series called “prized possessions” maybe once a week. So this would be Prized Possessions #1. They will be in no special order of monetary value.

I really like petrified wood and cut and polished quite a lot of it when I was young. It can be very nice to work with.

Egad, shades of my visit to Arizona's Petrified Forest back in 1988! Tons of that stuff all over the place. I have shots of it on film but my scanner does a less than admirable job in reproduction. Anyway, the lighting in the above pic reveals a whole host of neat indentations and textures on the ossified trunk, Dana.

I was driving across the Western US(very young)and asked for work at the Grand Canyon Caverns and my job was to move petrified stone around the exterior.I did it for one day and I had never worked like that up until then.the next morning my body was in a world of hurt.each piece was probably between 60 and 100 pounds outstanding capture

Found this post in Andrea's favorite folder. Recall collecting this and much more on the BLM land south of Petrified NP. Your allowed to collect up to 25 pounds and one piece per day(no weight limit on the one piece).
