Description
One of the benefits of a big city, or perhaps one of its drawbacks, is the possibility of discovering a little bit of home away from home. And so it was during a walkabout in Jakarta I discovered these two American icons 10,000 miles from home. I stopped at Swensen's to get some ice cream. Inside was the same decor as the one I used to visit in West Los Angeles. The same paper hats worn by the same high school kids with acne. And the same ice cream. Even the same fractured English by the employees. I would never have known I wasn't in Los Angeles. It was quite surreal.

They do say its a small world. Cool shot and write up.

How very odd! I imagine it WAS a bit surreal. After being surrounded by a different culture, to stumble upon a bit of home ... it must have been jarring!

The small differences would be interesting!

I like the grainy texture of this shot, and the cool contrast of colours- thanks for sharing! :)

Almost poster-like image! A lot of Brits will only go abroad where they can get what they have at home, with the addition of sunstroke, sex and sangria.

Makes the world seem a bit smaller some how. And I guess it would help with homesickness to see something that could remind you of home. Nice image.

I remember walking into a 7/11 in Tokyo. The 7/11 sign was the only familiar thing there. I remember the Macadonells in Tokyo too. I think I ate at one once. I don't remember why. Now ice cream would have exerted a greater pull. I've never heard of Swensen's. Great shot and narrative.
