Description
Took the kids up to Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park some weeks ago. It is pretty much a coastal unit of the larger Redwoods State Park. The gold bluffs, Roosevelt Elk and of course the Redwoods are the big draw to this area.
After a short time my son comes strolling down the beach with a Pelican. I've seen the kids bring me back all kinds of trinkets before, but a live Pelican! As I get my daughter's attention and tell her what I'm seeing, I get the, "ya, sure Dad". Only to see her jaw drop as she turns to look. ;~)
As we approached the two walking our way I could see what was really going on. The poor thing had broken a wing. Can only assume he was walking the edge of the surf in hope of finding something edible, unable to fish for itself. The kids wanted me to bring it to the Ranger after asking if we could take it home first. I unfortunately had to explain that they would not let us take it anywhere and that the Rangers would more than likely not come to it's aid either. That as wondrous and beautiful as nature can be. There is another side, and as ugly as it seems, this is part of natures way.
We did run into a Ranger back where the hike began. I knew what the response would be, but for the kids I explained what we found. The Ranger shrugged it of and went back to watching the Elk as expected. Needless to say the kids did not like the outcome of this lesson learned, such is life.
To the kind souls that leave their mark whether a comment, rating, or save the image as a fav, you are very much appreciated, thank you!!!
Thank you all that viewed my last image below.

Check this link for California wildlife rescue: Click Here Breaks one's heart...here in Washington there are rescue groups that do pick up all sorts of wild critters in need of medical attention...nurse them back to health and return them to the wild when the bird or animal is able... Neat photo. Glad you went the extra mile as part of a life lesson for the kids. Somber moment I am sure.

The Ranger also informed me that state park rules prohibit the removal of wildlife. Thanks for the link Bill.

It may be ugly but the picture is great Dana, shame about its wing.

It is necessary to learn these things. Lets hope it didn't have to suffer too long.

Very nice shot! For what's it worth, I think you did well in trying to educate your kids about this side of life! Martin

In nature this is how things go, but it my survive for a time finding things to eat on the waters edge or become food for the crabs and in so complete the circle of life. Excellent capture! :)

Of course, if you had killed it rather than let it slowly starve to death you would probably have been arrested. Sometimes things make no sense. Superb but sad image.

Surely you wouldn't be fined taking a bird to a wildlife rescue group, or at least informing them with a quick cell phone call. I would have put it in the back of the truck quick smart regardless.....fine or no fine. I think if the ranger didn't do anything to come to this bird's aid, then it was time for a new ranger!!! The rangers around here would have dropped everything to help. But you are right it is life. Thanks for posting. Great job.

What a shame the rangers manner was so off putting and it was a very hard lesson for your children. Down here our rangers have just spent over $40,000 getting a penguin back to health and are taking it back to the Antarctic waters by ship.

I used to be of the opinion that we had best let nature do what nature does, until someone close to me pointed out that we are part of nature and if we are moved to assist a fellow creature, then we should. It's understandable the Wildlife Service doesn't have the funds to care for all the sick and injured animals that come their way, but they should allow those who are willing and able to help where they can. We are not apart from nature. Great photo and subject!

What an odd attitude to take. I understand the 'let nature take it's course' thing, but we've mucked things up so much, we need to intervene to save what we have left, or there won't be anything.

It is so sad to read about your Rangers, this wouldn't happen here in Australia, as 'blinkings' also mentioned and 'npauling' from New Zealand - we will do anything to preserve the life of our injured animals and we get them quick-smart to a Wildlife Sanctuary Hospital or to see a Veterinarian ... I am shocked by such nonchalance! BB

We've got places you can take wounded or damaged creatures. Had a pigeon with a broken wing the other day and took it to a centre. I bet they'd love to have had a real pelican.
