Sorry for the corny title - just couldn't resist. My name is Dennis and I just got back into photography after two-decade layoff. I started off in 35mm in 1973 and lugged a couple of bags of gear, cameras, lenses, etc around the world during a 22 year Navy career. I got out of that habit after kids came along and cribs, diaper bags and car seats elbowed out camera gear for room in the car. Also, while my wife was remarkably patient with my stopping and waiting for just the right lighting, dirty-diapered kids were less so.
I got back into photography after my wife "forced" me to buy a DSLR in December of 2008. We'd gone to a camera store to buy a point and shoot for her to use in her antiques and collectibles business and she caught me looking at a couple of DSLRs in the display case. She suggested I check them out 'just for fun", but, when I tried to give them back to the sales person she asked "Which one do you want?" and refused to leave the store until I chose one.
Sadly, I lost Mrs Sea_Dog to cancer six months later, but fortunately she got to see me revive the passion I once had. My gallery is a lasting tribute to her and our love.

Over the last two and a half years, since learning about Renderosity from a friend, has been a continuous learning and discovery process. The artists here are so amazingly talented and inspirational - and extremely friendly. Seeing their work and reading their comments on mine have allowed me to grow as an artist much faster than I could have on my own.

It doesn't bother me because it is not in my backyard I guess, but I know of a couple of very public spots that have been altered by people who have decided on their own that they would make a shrine to someone. They have ruined a good view for many people, and it was done in front of a public viewpoint of historical significance. So I stand against allowing people to do this on public land. If allowed to stand, more will follow and people will look for there "own" place for their shrine. Your photo shows three crosses. I'll bet it started with one and it probably won't be long before they are all destroyed.

''So I stand against allowing people to do this on public land. If allowed to stand, more will follow and people will look for there "own" place for their shrine.'' (Whaleman above) HELLO! I AGREE with Whaleman above. An old saying says, "Be Careful What One Asks for cuz' you may GET it". So if a HINDU or MUSLIM or ANOTHER person or group wants to start putting up THEIR 'signs' or 'crosses' or 'symbols' are you/I/we OK with THAT, ALSO? As a man o' FAITH myself, I leave this: "Render unto CAESAR that which is Caesar's and to GOD that which is GOD's" (Seems like JESUS wanted to keep the TWO entities 'Separate' also?)

Excellent shot, fantastic colors and details

I can understand a roadside cross if there was a fatality at that location, have no issue with rememberance. However for the reason Wayne has stated above and for addressing the defacing of our public lands on all fronts. Does not matter if it is littering/dumping, graffitti, or even a cross. Great open vista!

I agree with you Dennis and the view is just fine. Dana

If most people did not think they would have their little me as better for them, there will always be disagreement for some reason because they do not want to admit that their little me a little lower les there will always be a good reason to complain to complain like. we must accept the visions of this nature that shows that some people have given some value to erecting their tandems as Bravo and I do not think it bothers me either lol ((5 + + )) Si la plupart des gens ne pensaient pas à leur petit moi se serait comme mieux pour eux ,Il y aura toujours mésentente pour x raisons car ils ne veulent pas admettre que leur petit moi est un peu affaiblitet il y aura toujours une bonne raison de se plaindre pour se plaindre comme .Il faut accepter les visions de cette nature qui nous démontre que certaines gens y ont accorder une certaine valeur en y érigeant leurs tandems comme Bravo et je ne croie pas que cela me dérange non plus lol ((5++))

This is a beautiful landscape image with or without the crosses, super saturated colours.

I have to agree with Whaleman and Dale. with the type of people complaining about any and everything it is prudent to follow the constitution and separate church and state.if not a repeat of Europe could be a reality here and defeat the purpose of the pilgrims. a certain candidate from Texas (repub) will take all the progress made by the congress and senate to force his religious views on the American public.the US does not need another "good ole boy" from Texas.oh, I forgot this is about California beautiful capture none the less

Well seen Dennis. Got here late,...after your editing adding a remark that someone took them away in the middle of the night. As a person of faith, I would have voted to keep the crosses here. May the thief in the night, if he has a conscience, see the error of his ways. I've never found it difficult to move my POV around an object in open ground.

I think they are poignant, and much more beautiful than electricity pylons. If only someone would take THOSE away in the middle of the night!!

Beautiful capture , composition and colors !

I would not want to see this on public land. There was a reason for the separation of church and state being built into the foundations of our country. There had been centuries of religious wars in Europe when this country was founded. Religious symbols are just that, symbols. They have different meanings for different people. Pogroms, which in western history were most often attacks by Christians on Jews, were a morally corrupt use of religion, and they have left their marks in the memories of many. For them the sight of a cross would not bring pleasant thoughts of forgiving grace. All religions have examples of being used for evil. I agree with TallPockets, that unless a person would be happy to see any religious symbol on public land, he should not promote his own. Beautiful capture. Wonderful view and lighting. I like the light on the bare branches in the foreground.
