Description

In the week in which I’d discovered a dry, dead onion-skin, and the effects of various-colored LEDs, I found eggs as well. Fascinated by their shapes (in light, darkness, and strange combinations of the two) I photographed them. Many of the shots I took were unspectacular; others were more successful. I photographed two eggs, mainly interested in their shapes. I didn’t realize the strength of the shadows surrounding them, or the light defining their contours. I didn’t expect to see the vague outline of a yolk, in the shape of a small sun, not yet hatched. The thought amused me, and upon later inspection of this photograph, I noticed the shell of the nearer egg, and the odd mottle of light defining its shape. I thought—again—of suns, one in particular: an energetic, fast-rotating stellar body. I thought that the speed of its rotation flattened it—ever so slightly—into an oblate shape. I thought of stellar granulation patterns as light found its way through imperfections in one, very particular eggshell. I marveled at the shift in light: though pure white, it photographed as blue, and yellowed in its course through the body of an uncooked egg. Stories bubbled in my mind, but none have yet found expression, but this is their source: two eggs, shadows, and light. In looking back at various photos I've taken, I notice that I seem to have developed a fascination for shining light through things, just to see what happens when I photograph them. I rather like such little experiments: the camera captures so much of what the eye misses. The camera freezes time, captures a single moment in all of its visual complexity, and allows a more casual scrutiny of whatever the lens has snared. I suspect I'll be shining light through a few more things as time progresses, and I'm also amazed at how much better that is to play with light than to watch television...though now that I've mentioned television, I wonder what an onion-skin, egg shell, or other slightly translucent thing might look like, with television fizz wafting through it. As always, thank you for viewing, reading, and commenting and I hope you’re all on the verge of a great weekend.

I'm with you on the television Chip! I cancelled my cable about five years ago and cut my watching time way down, but I still could get a few channels via the air, but in Canada over-the-air analog transmission ceased on September 1st, unless you choose to purchase a digital to analog converter for $60 or so. I chose not to do that because I believe over-the-air digital will be stopped soon because they don't want anyone getting anything free (even though we pay for CBC through our taxes). Another reason is they with the amount of advertising (Even on satellite movie channels, they say!) on regular TV channels they should actually be paying us to watch! So I have now cut the final cord! Bye bye TV producers, you just lost a pair of eyeballs! Now I can spend more time on Renderosity!

I'm loving the play of colours in the light here. And the nearer egg, the flattened planetoid thing, seems to have a few large cities that are reflecting their own light back at you. Wonderful study, Chip!

Uh oh, I have the TV on right now, though I'm only watching with one ear and one eye. I just spent a week at my son's with no TV and lived to tell the tale. He also had no internet; now THAT wasn't easy and don't even ask about cell phone reception. If I was lucky, leaned over the deck rail just right, I might get connected. Otherwise, a 5 mile drive to a gas station in this little tiny town and voila!! Now, about those eggs--wow, you come up with some of the most awesome fotos with the least likely objects--this is WAY cool!!
