Description

Hello again! Berlin and fashion? Yes, it works, and it works better with every year. Let`s begin with the fashion history of this city: Berlin have had a great fashion tradition in the last century, especially in the 20ies and 30ies. We call the 20ies as Berlins "Golden Age" in many directions. Center of fashion in Berlin was the heighborhood of the "Spittelmarket", which later became part of East-Berlin and the Sovjet sector. In Berlin`s fashion industry many jews were in leading positions - as creators, but although as traders and owners of great warehouses. When the Nazi regime began to opress the jews the whole fashion industry had a decline and ended with WW II. After WW II a new fashion industry was established in West - Berlin and reached a remarkable level, but not the level of the 20ies. Many tailors established their ateliers along the Kudamm, Berlin`s finest street, and made remarkable fashion. They became local heroes in Berlin and western Germany, but not international. In the 70ies something changed: In West-Berlin the so called "off"-fashion" grew up, situated in Berlin backyards in small facturies and sweatshops, leaded by many very talented creatives with only small money. They began to create a new style of fashion for normal people with small income. After the fall of the Wall the fashion industry grew up permanently and former East Berlin offered many new locations and abilities for young fashionistas and creatives from all part of the world. And East Berlin young people were very talented to create an own style far away from the boring communistic clothes. Then Punk fashionist VIVIANNE WESTWOOD settled from London to Berlin and got a professur at our art school... Meanwhile the "Berlin style" is established and big names from all parts of the world come to Berlin to present their collections in bizarre locations..... In the moment Berlin tries to establish itsself new among New York, Paris, London and Milano, an experiment with an open end. Berlin fashionists prefer New York and are not interested in Paris or Milano in this moment. The Berlin fashion must be cheap, a little kinky and trashy..... This picture was taken in 2007 at the Osthafen (East Harbour), an areal that was closed after the fall of the Wall. All harbour buildings are now occupied by fashion companies, music industry or young start ups from different directions. Pic was taken through a glas window. Thanks for your interest and your comments. Please feel free to send new ones. The are all wellcome. Bye for today; its ghost hour here... billcody

Thank you for the data you have given us here - that is great - because I've been away from Berlin far too long, from this amazing City - that never sleeps! and I also learned about Vivienne Westwood's hide-out! BTW what a novel way of a Fashion parade - I am sure, that they can save a lot of money by not paying these models! ;-) Kudos on this image, BB
