How wonderful - I can honestly say, I have missed these Melbourne trams, they are part of that big City and practically an icon - living now on the QLD/NSW border and wishing we had some of them here ... thanks for the memories, BB

Super shot Andrew. That contraption on the top which collects the current from the overhead wires is called a 'Pantograph'. Before I retired I worked for a comany in Chard, UK called Brecknell Willis who make these and other current collection gear. Our sister company in Australia is called Austbreck.

Fascinating. Not seen a tram in real life here yet. The nearest one must be 200 miles away from me.

Oh, these look to be fairly new in design, and comfortable. A great step up from the one I once lived in that was 1950's vintage! Zoom is well worthwhile!

A very crisp and sharp shot! Sadly the only part of Melbourne I've seen is the airport!

Do that make that oddly rubberized noise too? Czech trams (a completely different breed of beauty from this lovely specimen) have the best, hard-to-describe sound; the only term that comes to mind is...well...rubberized. They produce an odd sort of groaning, whizzing sound (almost like the sound effects to the USS Enterprise in high warp in the classic, 1960s beehive/miniskirt version of Star Trek.) They also ding their antique-sounding bells at every intersection, and I'd be thrilled to know that their Australian cousins do the same. And as for this puppy, what a beauty! I love trams...they're so efficient, and they add such character to a place. This is really great; I love glimpses into other cities, other places, and this is as good as they come. I love the composition too, it zooms, if that makes sense.
