Description
During the early days of motion picture and television, Albert J. Whitlock became a leading pioneer in the field of 2D matte art. His professional career spanned decades and he is perhaps best known for his work with Disney and Universal Studios. The wonderfully impressionistic, sci-fi backdrops that he painted for the television series Star Trek in the 1960s, inspired me tremendously as a young artist. As most Trekkers are aware, The Star Trek series was given a CGI makeover by CBS/Paramount and re-released in 2006. Many of the original Whitlock matte paintings shown in the episodes were totally reinterpreted and presented using state of the art 3D software. Others were simply color corrected and presented in their original 2D form. One of the most enduring scenes that was left in its original form, can be seen in the series second pilot, entitled Where No Man Has Gone Before. It is the screenshot that shows the Lithium Mining Station on Delta-Vega. I was disappointed that no 3D recreation of this particular matte painting made its way to final production. So I decided to create my own 3D version using Vue (e-on software) exclusively. The title and theme of my image presented here were both derived from that famed episode s story line. This version is presented with no post work.
