Description

THE ORANGE ORDER on parade, Belfast, Ireland. The Orange Institution (more commonly known as the Orange Order or Orange Lodge) is a Protestant fraternal organisation based mainly in Northern Ireland and Scotland, though it has lodges throughout the Commonwealth and United States. The Institution was founded in 1796 near the village of Loughgall in County Armagh, Ireland. Its name is a tribute to Dutch-born Protestant William of Orange, who defeated the army of Catholic James II at the Battle of the Boyne (1690). Politically, the Orange Institution is strongly linked to unionism. Observers have accused the Institution of being sectarian, triumphalist and supremacist. Catholics, and those whose close relatives are Catholic, are banned from becoming members. Non-creedal and non-trinitarian denominations (such as members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormons), Unitarians and some branches of Quakers) are also ineligible for membership, although these denominations do not have large congregations where most Orange lodges are found. Have a nice day,

Nice shot Steve and thanks for the info, I often wondered what it was all about.

The American comedian Gallagher once said about the Irish conflict, "In the absence of any real differences, people will make shit up." So much hatred and sorrow in this day and age is sad. Terrific image. Looks like you were right in the thick of it. Too bad about the LOL on the banner given its current meaning.

Mainly blokes who need to belong, and like a bit of aggro. Like the Scouts but with added nastiness.

My brother in Law who was a catholic actually joined the orange lodge under false pretence to enable him to get a certain job. He had attended an interview for a job and was caught short when he was asked what age his granny was ? Naturally he answered that she was dead. He never got the job. My late father who was what we call an orange man kindly informed him that he was in fact being asked his lodge number. So in actual fact he is a catholic orange man although he is not involved in either now...

I'll wager there's a lot of drinking going on in those lodges...that helps sharpen the thought processes! Funny, I don't see any people of color either? LOL, indeed!
