Description

This is Tower Bridge from atop the walls of the Tower of London complex. Tower Bridge is a combined bascule (the parts that are raised and lowered for larger ships to pass) and suspension bridge in London, England. It has a clearance, over the River Thames, of 28 feet (8.6 meters) when closed and 139 feet (42.5 meters) when open. It was opened, June 30, 1894 It is close to the Tower of London, from which it takes its name. It has become an iconic symbol of London. The bridge consists of two towers, each 213 feet (65 meters) high, built on concrete piers, and tied together at the upper level by means of two horizontal walkways. The bascule pivots (weighing over 1,000 tons each) and operating machinery are housed in the base of each tower. It takes 5 minutes to raise the bascules and this happen about 1,000 times a year. The bridge's present a color scheme dates from 1977, when it was painted red, white and blue for the Queen's Silver Jubilee. Originally it was painted a chocolate brown color. Tower Bridge is sometimes mistakenly referred to as London Bridge, which is the next bridge upstream. In order to maintain the integrity of the historic structure, the City of London has imposed a 20 mph (32 km/h) speed restriction, and an 18 ton weight limit, on vehicles using the bridge. Tower Bridge Road crosses the bridge, used by over 40,000 people (motorists, cyclists and pedestrians) every day. Info from Wikipedia. 1995 photo scanned. Zoom is a must. Thanks for stopping by my gallery, taking a look and for all your previous favs and comments. They are very much appreciated. Dana

Fantastic shot Dana. Around 1961 I went through this bridge on a large cruise boat and the bridge had to be raised to let us through.

The most impressive part of the bridge is the counter balance mechanics inside he tower bases.

Great capture Dana and thanks for the information, some of which I didn't know. BTW, I was one of the pedestrians. Last time I got stuck in London in December 2009 in rain and wet snow. As to your comment to my F-11 upload. Was it $78? I thought it was $76, but than the Navy might have paid you guys two bucks extra. BTW, $76/78 was before they took out all the mandatory pay! Spendable income was way less and I didn't even have a camera, but then I had more important things to do than take pictures lol!!
