Description

UARS was launched into low orbit by the Shuttle Discover in 1991 to help study earth’s atmosphere. My wife helped design this satellite several decades ago. It’s now back in the news because its orbit has decayed and it is likely to reenter in late September or early October. It’s a big satellite (6.5-Tons, 10.7 meters long and 4.5 meters wide) and reentry should be visible even during daylight hours. NASA expects the debris to land somewhere along the Americas. UARS model made in Maya. Background image courtesy of NASA.

Thanks for showing us the model of this satellite. Interesting to see. By the time I saw your pic, the satellite has already come down somewhere but I didn't hear where it ended up. I heard plans for one new important additional atmospheric satellite have been delayed, which is so sad given the need to understand our atmosphere better for climate change modelling.
