Description

The McDonnell Douglas (now Boeing) F/A-18 Hornet is a supersonic, all-weather carrier-capable multirole fighter jet, designed to dogfight and attack ground targets (F/A for Fighter/Attack). And they are noisy....VERY VERY NOISY!

F-14's are outdated and heavy, but in their defense they have been in service for something like 30 years! So they did well, and really were more of an interceptor than a pure fighter. The Tomcat was a great machine for fleet air defense in the Cold War years. My cousin is a current Hornet pilot and doubts the F-14 could hold its own in a turning fight with the F-18. The Hornet's airframe, hydraulics, etc, are apparently FAR more reliable than the F-14, so you end up having more useable airplanes with the Hornet. Saying that, speaking purely as a photographer who likes plane watching, I reckon Toms were great in their day.

Steve, I don't think I have. I have on other planes....slower planes......but to tell you the truth I'm so excited seeing the fighters I generally just use a really fast shutter so I don't miss anything. The plane in the photo was going like the proverbial rocket! They go by so quickly I am scared I might miss something. As you know, dropping the shutter speed and panning means my chance for stuffing the whole shot up goes waaaaay up!

Superb shot mate! So good you can see the loading on the rears and the front going light, poised for take off (or it could be landing would get same effect I guess)! Very nice shot!!

What a shot! Of course, when I read the title, I was thinking of the other kind of hornet, but then I wonder why anyone other than me would take pictures of those, although it's conceivable that someone might. I love watching planes, military and otherwise and this one looks like it's taking off...at least I think it's taking off as these things come off the assembly line at mach-4, and being that fast, I don't see that pretty white smoke from vaporized tire rubber and runway streaming behind it, as it would upon one of these babies coming in hot. This is an amazing shot! And yeah, they are loud!
