Description

The American Falls, is one of three waterfalls, that together are known as Niagara Falls, on the Niagara River, along the US - Canada border. Unlike the much larger Horseshoe Falls, of which two-thirds of the falls is located in Ontario, Canada and one-third in New York State, US, the American Falls is completely within the US state of New York. The American Falls receive approximately 10% of the flow from the Niagara River, with most of the rest going over Horseshoe Falls, from which it is separated by Goat Island. It has a straight line crest width of about 830 feet (250 meters). The torrent of water passing over the crest of the falls is about 2 feet (0.61 meter) deep. The height of the American Falls ranges between 70 to 110 feet (2134 meters). This measurement is taken from the top of the Falls to top of the rock pile (talus). The rock pile did not come down the river, it has fallen off the face of the falls. The height of the Falls from the top of the Falls to the river is 188 feet (57 meters). The tour boat is called the Maid of the Mist and guaranteed to get you wet. There is also a group of people, to the right of the falls, in yellow rain gear. There is a set of stairs to walk down to the base of the falls. The rain gear is not waterfall gear and you will get very wet. Some info from Wikipedia. 1990s photo scanned. Zoom works for a closer look. Thanks for stopping by my gallery, taking a look and for all your previous favs and comments. They are very much appreciated. Dana

Waterfalls are such interesting hydro-geolocial thingies! I love the fact that they're constantly receding...inching their way up-river at a speed that can only be perceived if you're able to perceive things in Geologic Time; I always wonder what happens when a waterfall inches far enough back to kinda shimmy up against the source of its parent river. I'm sure that at some point, someone might actually be around to see that happen. Not me, mind you, but someone. And to top it off, you've captured a stunning shot! The falls are impressive, especially in conjunction with that boat, itself a pretty hefty beauty, but its dwarfed by all of that downward tumbling water. I love the colors as well. In short, this is a superb photo.

Gosh, Dana! Having never been there, I had this romantic idea that no building would be visible in the vicinity. Thankyou for putting the Maid of the Mist into a real context!
