Octane is a GPU based renderer efron_241. You need to have an Nvidia graphics card that has cuda cores, to use it. It uses the graphics card to render rather than the CPU. I learned about it a few months ago, from amazing renders I saw on forums, that were exported from daz or poser that were way better than anything I did. My old dual core was starting to show it's age for rendering, so I saved up for a new computer that had a graphics card withy cuda cores so I could try Octane. I got a sandy bridge core I7-2600 with 8gb and a 440GT with 3gb ddr3 off of ubid for $650. The first thing I did was download the Octane demo. You can't save your pics, or go above 1000x600 dimensions, but it gives you the chance to try it and see if you can use it. With some decent forumposts on the Octane site, i was able to start adjusting the material nodes on the demo within 24 hours, exporting from poser in the wavefront obj. format. The renders were better than anything I had ever done in poser or daz. I was sold so I bought it for 99 euros. It came to 149 USD with the current exchange rate. The amazing thing is the render time. This pic took about 30 minutes to render on my GT440. A gtx 580 is roughly 14 times faster, so this could be done on a gtx 580 in roughly less than 3 minutes. After the new computer and poser pro 2012 pre order, next up is a gtx 580 on my shopping list. Inanimate objects are absolutly amazing in Octane. Human figures require more work and experimentation in the materials after export, though I have produced better results with certain models than I have ever had in daz or poser. I have bought a lot of models from renderosity and daz, so as I have time to try more, I am sure others will be just as good as the best I have found so far. It really is an amazing program and if you have a cuda core nvidia card, check out the demo and see what you can do. Google Octane Render or Refractive software to check it out. It has it's limitations in that it can't do big scenes and is limited by your graphics cards memory, but the renders of what it can do are sweet once you learn to fix the material nodes from a poser or daz export. It also has plugins for some of the more expensive software like 3ds max. You will probably end up buying a license like I did once you get the hang of it, if you try it.
