He's just standing there because that's his job, to watch and instruct, to assist the ones that get hurt off the sand so they can come back when the crowd is there to cheer them on.
Not that he can't fight, that big frigging axe ain't just for show.
I didn't click the violence warning because while the arena setting is violent and bloody, the picture isn't. If I got it wrong, it won't be the first time, probably the last either. People's sensibilities are sooooo varied.
