Description

This is an American National Monument in Wyoming and is a religeous symbol to the American Indians. About 50 million years ago molten magma was forced into sedimentary rocks above it and then cooled underground. As it cooled it contracted and fractured into columns. Over millions of years erosion of the sedimentary rocks exposed Devils Tower. The tower today rises 867 feet (approx 290M) from its base and 5,112 feet above sea level. The area of its top is 1.5 acres, the diameter of its base is 1000 feet. Sage grows atop and there is a family of ground squirrels there too.

I've never seen Close Encounters, but we DID see Devil's Tower a couple days ago ... from way, way far away! LOL! Driving down I-90 it's actually visible at one point, and must be 20 or 25 miles across the plains. (We were in the badlands yesterday afternoon. What a place!) Thanks for this ... we wanted to see it, but didn't have time.

Since I have now seen the Giant's Causeway, I really should see the Devil's Tower. Maybe someday. Gorgeous capture. Wonderful POV, framing, and details. I love the soft colors!
