Description

Happy Birthday, Jock! I so enjoy all your images of Lake Charles and the areas around it, so I decided that I would post some images of my home town for you. My only criteria was that they be shot in San Antonio and that they be of many different subjects in honor of the rich diversity of your gallery. So here for you are; a sports image (one of the few of them I have taken), a kind of fun picture of myself, an image with some history, a famous feature of San Antonio, brushes from work, and mail vans. I hope you like this slice of San Antonio. Have a fantastic birthday! Starting at the top left corner and going clockwise. 1. Taken at a red light near work, with my trusty pocket camera. 2. Brushes at the car wash 3. The Texas Fuel is a basketball team of the American Basketball Association. They are "America's Green Team" and are located in San Antonio. Inspired by the documentary "Fuel" they champion green energy and spread the film's message with various activities and an educational entertainment during their halftime shows. The church I go to aired the movie and members of the team came to the church, talked about their commitment to renewable energy, and played basketball with the kids. 4."The Hay Street Bridge, constructed as two separate railroad bridges in the late 19th century, is the oldest truss bridge in San Antonio. Since 1910, when it was moved to its current location, it has served as a viaduct connecting the east side of the city to downtown. By the early 20th century, the Galveston, Harrisburg and San Antonio Railway Company planned to expand their tracks across east-west streets between downtown and the city's Eastside. The city agreed to the expansion provided the railroad erected a viaduct for pedestrians and vehicular traffic to cross the tracks. In 1910, the railroad moved two wrought iron spans from elsewhere on its lines and widened them to 25 feet to construct a bridge over the tracks at Hays Street. The longer of the two spans, dating to 1881, came from a railroad crossing at the Nueces River west of Uvalde, Texas. Less is known about the origins of the shorter span." In 1982 the bridge had to be closed for safety reasons and was almost demolished. There were petitions to the city to save the bridge and with federal funding, it was saved and reopened for bike and pedestrian traffic in July of 2010. It is now owned by the City of San Antonio and has been designated a Texas Civil Engineering Landmark and a City of San Antonio Local Landmark. The smaller span is a Pratt Truss and the larger one is a Whipple Truss. (All info taken from the marker at the bridge, quoted and paraphrased.) 5. The River Walk, an iconic and beloved feature of San Antonio. There is a timeline history of the river walk http://www.thesanantonioriverwalk.com/history/history-of-the-river-walk/ I took the picture of my reflection at the top if the Tower of the Americas, a 750-foot observation tower, built as a theme structure for the 1968 World's Fair. It was very windy up there.

I'm getting to people's galleries. I apologize to all I haven't been to in a while. It is not from lack of interest, and I will be there!

Although I was only there for a few short years, I consider San Antonio to be one of two "home towns" in Texas. I love these reminders of culture and, of course, the River Walk. Lovely collage and a wonderful birthday wish for Jock.

Splendid collage in honor of Jock's birthday commemoration, Lucinda. I didn't know it was his birthday. And, I didn't realize that your home town was so diverse. The part about the viaduct reminds me of the Marx Brothers' takeoff on the word, when they kept asking the question, why-a-duck?

First things - first: An amazing collage with points of interests of your hometown - but I really like your 'windy vision' of yourself, closely followed by the other 'bad hair-day' car-wash pic ... hilarious! Secondly: Congratulations on your '300's' post - I've got a long way to go to ever play catch up's! Thirdly: A very HAPPY BIRTHDAY to Jocko and many happy returns! ... and last but not least ~ Thank You Lucinda! ~ for the brave efforts of leaving a few great comments on some earlier posts, which is very much appreciated and always welcomed, you are a very wise, young Lady - with so much knowledge and intuitive perception ... Cheers from your Ozzie friend, BB
