Description
These are some of the monks of the Drepung Loseling Monastery working on a sand painting in Modesto Ca. The monastery was established in 1416 but the monks went into exile when communism invaded the area and destroyed 6,500 monasteries. They are very close to the Dalai Lama and as you see honor him were ever they go. They are here to perform multiphonic singing, dancing, music and to spread the word of Buddhist tradition.
It is amazing to watch them work. they are steady and never seem to put a grain of sand in the wrong place. Very peaceful.
The link to their website will explain more than I can here.

If you get a chance to see this it is inspiring and restful. their schedule is at their site.
I hope you enjoy this as much as I have.

This is certainly a different kind of art - these Monks are creating, from the one we are used to. So bright and cheerful, which is a joy to watch and I can almost see those grains falling ... patience is on their side! (just hoping nobody needs to sneeze, sorry Greg, I couldn't resist) Personally, I do believe in some of the Buddhist's ideals - my motto: 'live and let live' thanks for the link, BB

Oh Gosh! This is fabulous! I have long been a follower of the Dalia Lama as well and it great to see these monks as work. Look at how large this sand art will be when it is done... Great job catching the peace as well as the concentration.

Excellent shots.

Superb capture of these monks at work. I have seen examples of this before. When they are done the mandala is destroyed symbolizing the transitory nature of all things. Excellent work, there's and your's.
