Description

I wasn't aware that there was such a thing as a white peacock until I saw this guy at the West Coast Game Park Safari in Bandon, Oregon, where we took our grandson this summer. It's billed as the largest petting zoo in the U.S. Lots of both common & exotic animals, many of which roam free through the grounds & others who you get to interact with only under supervision - like the Bengal tiger cub that my grandson got to hold on his lap. People tend to either love or hate this place. Some people feel that the enclosures (for those animals who can't run free) are too small & that the animals are being exploited & not treated well. I'm not really sure about it. There's something to be said for allowing children to be exposed to the diversity of life up close, but it comes at a cost to these animals. I didn't see any evidence of mistreatment, but maybe, in my desire to make this an enjoyable day for my grandson, I wasn't looking hard enough.

I am a very political person but usually try to keep it off this site. I believe strongly about this, so I am adding my 2 cents. People who want to close these places do so at the detriment of wildlife as a whole. places like this allow people to get close and personal with the animals. Which makes the conservation of these animals more personal. I think it makes individuals more likely to help support wildlife. No wildlife would choose captivity and all enclosures are too small, but for some to be captive to teach and interact with humans is good for the rest of the species... Just my not so humble opinion. ;-) Very nice capture as well.
