I meant to ask does anyone know what the basket on a pole is for.

Lovely scene with some very serious clouds brewing! Yes I would say the basket on the pole is a Brazier beacon. They are traditionally lit to mark celebrations and gatherings. In ancient times beacons were used as a signal-fire. Warnings or messages could be passed from beacon to beacon across the country.

Beautiful! I love this. The levels of this photograph are all amazing. Beautiful long crop and centering of the subject. The dark contrasting structure in the foreground still has so much detail when you zoom this shot, and the house in the background has so much character, it draws the attention of the eye, too. AND THEN the beautiful storm to the left, just a sweep of rain visible in an amazing orange hugh. Beautiful shot, instant favourite- thanks for sharing! :) And have you checked out the Photography Story Challenge? Go continue the story!

The zoom view shows the motion in the clouds. Fantastic capture Alan. I saw a lot of these May 1995. They were all over Great Briton, made of metal, taller and held bonfires for the 50th anniversary of VE-Day. Dana
