and here is story about it:
Otto von Guericke (1602 - 1686)
The scientists, technicians, local politician and diplomat, is the most famous son of Magdeburg. He was mayor for 30 years the same city and more than 50 years working in the City Council. The "Galileo Germany" is considered the founder of experimental physics and natural science-rounder. He was a pioneer in weather forecasting and invented the first Elekrisiermaschine the world.
With the invention of the vacuum pump and associated valves and recipients, Guericke was the founder of vacuum technology. He succeeded the first time to pump air and creating a vacuum in an arbitrarily large and dense container. One of his most famous experiments, after the invention of the vacuum pump in 1650, was the Magdeburg hemisphere experiment, part of von Guericke "Magdeburg experiments," which even today has a presence with imaginatively designed hemispheres in pedestrian zones and parks throughout the city.
His scientific legacy he has in his book "Experimenta Nova ..." together. Guericke was also a messenger of Magdeburg, in the peace negotiations after the 30-year war in Munster and Osnabruck.

Super Gegenlicht-Aufnahme.
