Description
Another view of the planet New Tarakina IV. Here we can see the coast of one of the large inland seas. The surface of New Tarakina IV has ~75% land and no real oceans. However, there are several large, shallow inland seas. The water depth in these seas averages about 15m with the deepest spot discovered so far reaching 200m. Due to the shallow waters and mostly steep coasts, the exploration of the seas is carried out with crawler subs (front right). These can move across the sea floor under water and can also float to the surface and move slowly like a boat. They are deployed with large carryall crafts (background left) that can carry three subs and deploy/recover them from their target areas. The subs have a crew of four and are set up to operate for up to six days independently. Also visible is an automated surveillance tower with a maintenance crew visiting and the main ground base of the exploration corps (background centre).
It took me long time to decide how to set up this scene. I wanted to do a coastal shot of the same planet used for "Somewhere out there" but retain the overall look of the planet with it volcanic peaks and flows. I ended up using the same terrain fractal as a base and mixing it with an elevation map of a coastal cliff. The resulting look produced what I was looking for for, including the basalt column like structures in the centre. The base and ship models are from rj001 and skynet3020 and were textured in Vue.
Scene setup and rendering in Vue 9.5 Infinite.
