Description

Captured 8/3/11, at the beautiful Aquarium of the Pacific in beautiful Long Beach, California. Much better viewed full size. I thought at first that this was a juvenile Harlequin Sweetlips, but MrsRatbag, through some research of her own, correctly identified it as a Spotted Black Grouper. Thanks tons, Denise. The original on top, with the brightened version on the bottom. -------------------- The spotted black grouper is one of the only fully-protected fish in New Zealand waters. Their colour pattern is highly variable and can change quickly from a uniform dark grey-black to a blotched or distinctively banded dark and light pattern. Young fish often have a number of distinct black markings that tend to fade as the fish grows. They are most common around 1-1.5m but may grow up to 2m long. While not particuarly common in New Zealand they are reguarly seen in areas such as the Bay of Islands. What a beautiful creature this is! Love those spots, he's quite stylish, whatever his name/species might be. About all I'm certain of is that it's a fish, probably a saltwater one. Not too good, eh? You've managed an excellent shot here, Harry, very well done indeed!

No wonder it is fully protected as it is so unusual with the spots. Great that you have one to look at in your aquarium as I haven't seen one before. Excellent capture and this time I like the original shot.

Beautiful captures of this very interesting fish. Wonderful detail on zoom. I love the detailed textures and the light and shadow on his top fins in the first image. Nice polka dots. I'm tempted to ask if he comes in gingham, but I won't.
