Description
Imagine a volcano 50 kilometers long and 15 kilometers wide (30 miles by 9 miles). Now imagine that volcano destroyed in a super volcanic eruption producing a plume of ash over 50 kilometers (30 miles) high and ejecting 442 square kilometers (265 square miles) of material. It is believed to have been the largest explosive eruption anywhere on Earth in the last 25 million years. The result some 70,000 years later would become Lake Toba (100 kilometers long and 30 kilometers wide, 60 miles by 18 miles). This was the view from the balcony of my room.

It is hard to imagine that, in fact I don't think anyone could really. But there is the result, and a nice shot of it!

It's a gorgeous pic. Alas my mind goes blank at the mention of big numbers.I once burst into tears in the bank, something I am not prone to do even at funerals, when the teller started talking in numbers instead of English. From the balcony of your room? WOW!

When I first saw this image, I thought, "How peaceful after all the activity of the one before." And then I read your words... So much for thoughts of stillness and peace. Very interesting narrative and beautiful view! I had to take a quick detour and look up the Toba eruption. There is a theory that there was a bottleneck in human evolution because of it. Beautiful capture! So still and peaceful. What a difference a day makes. (well more than just the one)
